inspired monday: nothing changes until you do

nothing changes until you do quote

in the past week, i’ve made a few changes in order to bring out the best in my days!

the first thing i did was decide that i wanted to start each day with writing, and end it by reading. granted, sometimes this means i’m reading and writing for school, but my goal is to work on my own writing and read for pleasure each day. to me, reading is a great way to unwind at the end of the day. and writing each morning keeps that muscle going and keeps me moving toward my writing goals =). this goal may or may not involve a cup of tea. morning and night ;).

another change i made a few days ago was to delete the facebook app from my phone. CRAZY, right?!! but it actually ties into the first change i made, in this way: i realized that i didn’t want to start my days by filling them with everyone else’s thoughts, everyone else’s images, and everyone else’s words. i needed to honor the beginning of my days. i needed to create space to commune with God. i needed to cherish my creativity. i would imagine that it’s a lot easier to hear your own voice in the quiet that inevitably comes from intentionally choosing to learn what you have to say, first. on top of that, there were just too many days when i would wake up peaceful and ready to start the day, reach for my phone, click that blue “f” icon, and scroll down my newsfeed to discover something that upset me. whether it was something personal or some news event in the media that struck a core with the masses,  it totally changed the frame of mind i was in and i had to make the decision that this was not okay. i do have to say, it is bizarre that i can only check facebook on my computer now. and i find myself habitually scanning through my phone to check facebook, only to realize that i can’t. it’s simultaneously frustrating and freeing. i still have the messenger app and the pages app for practicality, but man oh man did i spend so much time mindlessly scrolling through my news feed. it may not be a forever thing, but for the time being, i’m getting a kick out of it!

the third change i’m making is less of a practical, visible change and more of a thought-focused one. i decided that i want to stop defining my days by the number of things i accomplished that day. i didn’t even realize i was doing this. when you feel like you have an endless to-do list, with things being crossed off and more things being added each day, i’ve just found it impossible to go to bed at the end of the day feeling satisfied because there’s always something left to do, or worse, something that “could have been done.” yuck. and it was that realization–there’s always more to do–that made me realize that by measuring the value of my days based on what i finished, i was leading a very task-driven life. and as an emotional person who thrives on meaning, this realization made me sad. you might think it useful to measure how “on-track” your days are, but for me it’s just been counterproductive. if i focus on how i’m doing things, how i’m treating the people i come into contact with, how i’m treating myself, then i know i’m living with integrity in my character and ultimately that is more important to me. it’s a huge mind-shift and is something i’m still adjusting to, naturally. but i know in the long run that this is a much needed change for me.

would you try any of these? what kinds of things do you do to make your days your best? =)

wishing you a wonderful week!

(plus, you’ll get to read more of your favorite content on my blog?? how awesome is that?!)

faq & how to: what camera bag do you use?

I recently bought a new camera bag and I’m swooning over it. Like, head over heels in love. Why? Well, let me show you…

Can I tell you a secret? I had never owned a “real” camera bag before. Not even one of the black canvas manufacturer-default ones that normally come with your camera (hello, eBay!). It was time for me to make a serious upgrade and after having tested it out (at a wedding I recently photographed— coming to the blog soon!) I can happily admit that I made the right choice for me– it’s stylish, functional, roomy enough and is a great price! It doesn’t hurt that the color is gorgeous, too ;). I will forever treasure this bag because she serves as a reminder of how far I’ve come in my photography journey. It’s always meaningful when you can invest in yourself, especially with things that help you do your job! =)

Starting with the exterior, here’s a close-up of the magnetic snap closure of the bag. I like these because they don’t look like they close magnetically, but they make it 1933830383384040x more convenient when you’re shooting and need to get in and out of your bag quickly.

The bag has a carrying handle at the top, as well as an adjustable shoulder strap. The strap is made of a seat-belt like material, so it’s durable and comfortable.

Here’s a few examples of what the bag looks like on me:

These two are more of a casual look,

while this is what it looked like on me while I was working. Thanks so much to my second shooter Nicole for capturing this *awesome* shot of me. For some reason I had the bag turned to the front, but for most of the day I wore it to the side.

Thanks to the great shoulder strap (and probably thanks to the weight of the items I had in the bag), I could wear the bag on one shoulder (and as a cross-body bag) without worrying about whether it would fall off of my shoulder. I had it pretty full on the wedding day (the images below don’t show what my bag looked like on a wedding day–it would have less empty space and more of the things I needed), but surprisingly it didn’t feel that heavy to me.

To finish off the exterior, there’s a pocket in the back that also snaps shut. (Fun!!)

The bag has an interior 3-section divider,  which is also removable. You can take it out completely or move of the two inner divider sections around, which reallocates space while still protecting the contents of your bag. While I used the bag I had space in front, behind, and to the sides of the divider for additional items.

When I had the 70-200 in the bag, it was difficult to snap that side of the bag shut, which was not an issue for me because I read the reviews of the bag before I bought it, so I knew that was a possibility. Also, the 70-200 is kind of a beast of a lens and is not something I carry around with me 100% of the time on a wedding day. (Also, the other side of the bag did close with the 70-200 in the bag. Just fyi.)

And lastly, here’s a close up of the two front pockets! I found these were a great place to store things like business cards and wedding day snacks.

new website!!! | photographybypaulina.com

I have a big announcement to make:

I have a new website!!

I’m so excited to share it with you! To view my new site, go to: www.photographybypaulina.com

My first website was really great and I don’t have any complaints about it. It served me well for the time I used it, but I gradually wanted something I could customize just a bit more to showcase more of who am. I want to run a business founded on great relationships with my clients, and as my website is my storefront, I want clients to be able to get to know me upon viewing it. I ultimately wanted something I could grow with, and I believe my new website will allow me to do just that! I decided to go with Showit to host my website, and customized a Sitehouse stylegroup for the design. (If you’re looking for a logo /website designer or a branding consultant, let me know! I know of a lot of great designers who could meet your needs =). )

To avoid having to pay for two websites at once (lol) I had to wait until the end of June-beginning of July to switch over, meaning I had just a few days to get my new website up and running! I can’t count how many hours of sleep I’ve gotten (or missed, *ahem*. lol) over the past few days pre-launch, but it was so worth it. I’m still adding finishing touches and want to add even more to it (ex. a video from me!) but that’s the beauty of beginnings =). It was certainly a labor of love and I’m pretty sure I shed happy tears after I pressed “publish.” Haha. I hope that it gives you a pretty good idea of who I am and why I do the work I do.

In honor of my new website launch, I’m also doing my first giveaway!!!

I’m giving away a Starbucks gift card because let’s face it: it’s hot and who doesn’t want a special Starbucks drink to keep them cool? ;)

To enter, all you have to do is comment below and tell me which page on my new website is your favorite, and why. (ex. I love the “About” page because…)
